Former Royal Mail buildingVALUE: £0.5 million

CLIENT: ING Real Estate

LOCATION: Peterborough

CONTRACT START: May 2010

CONTRACT FINISH: Sept 2010

Challenge:
Separation and removal of goods bridge link to Peterborough East Coast Mainline railway station

Solution:
Liaison with Network Rail to facilitate overnight isolation and possession to allow link bridge removal

Project description and key features:
Following on from the successful demolition project at Northgate, Chester, KDC were again engaged by ING Real Estate to undertake the demolition of the former Royal Mail Depot and Sorting Office in Peterborough Town Centre. The former sorting office and five storey Regional Headquarters were positioned opposite the Queensway Shopping Centre and attached to Peterborough’s mainline station via a high level link bridge where the mail used to be loaded down to the platforms and aboard the mail trains. The ‘Station Quarter’ is earmarked for substantial redevelopment and this complex demolition project marks the first stage in this project. After extensive soft strip and asbestos removal works, which ran in parallel with liaison with Network Rail and East Coast Railways, KDC undertook the high reach demolition works, separations and, ultimately, a night-time crane lift to remove the link bridge and process the redundant arisings. Network Rails Construction Manager, Fin Everett, commended KDC’s professional approach in planning and implementation of the demolition works.
